SELF-SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

UK self-sponsorship is a business-led pathway, not a separate visa category. It allows an overseas entrepreneur, business owner, or senior professional to establish or use a genuine UK company, secure a Skilled Worker sponsor licence for that company, and be sponsored in an eligible skilled role under the Skilled Worker visa route.

TO STRUCTURE UK SELF-SPONSORSHIP CORRECTLY

Citizenship Invest supports UK self-sponsorship cases through a compliance-first approach, combining business structuring, sponsor licence readiness, eligible role planning, document preparation, and coordination with UK immigration professionals. Our role is to help clients build a credible route before the visa file is submitted.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

UK self-sponsorship is not an official standalone visa. It is a structured use of the Skilled Worker route, where the applicant's UK company becomes a licensed sponsor and then sponsors the applicant in a genuine eligible role.
The UK company must be genuine, legally operating or capable of lawfully operating in the UK, and able to meet sponsor duties. UK Visas and Immigration may review the business documents, HR systems, key personnel, role suitability, and compliance capability before granting a sponsor licence.
The sponsored position must be real, eligible, correctly mapped to an occupation code, and paid at the required salary level. Ownership of the company does not remove the need for a genuine vacancy, compliant salary, valid Certificate of Sponsorship, English-language eligibility, and ongoing sponsor compliance.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

citizenshipinvest
BUSINESS CONTROL
WORK THROUGH YOUR OWN UK COMPANY

The route can allow an eligible business owner or entrepreneur to work in the UK through their own company once the company is approved as a Skilled Worker sponsor.

Family Scope
A spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and eligible children may be able to apply as dependants, depending on the applicant's role and the current Skilled Worker rules.
Successful dependants can generally live, study, and work in the UK, except as a professional sportsperson or sports coach, subject to the conditions of their permission.
citizenshipinvest
COMPLIANCE STRUCTURE
SPONSOR LICENCE PATHWAY

The process gives the UK company a defined immigration framework: sponsor licence, Sponsor Management System access, Certificate of Sponsorship assignment, and Skilled Worker visa filing.
For serious investors, the value is in building a business and immigration structure that can withstand Home Office review before the visa application is filed.
The same framework can support business acquisitions, hospitality ventures, professional services companies, and other genuine UK operating businesses when the role and evidence are aligned.

LONG-TERM PLANNING
PATHWAY TO SETTLEMENT

A Skilled Worker visa can be granted for up to 5 years before extension is required, depending on the Certificate of Sponsorship and application.
The route may lead to indefinite leave to remain after 5 years where the applicant meets the residence, salary, continuing employment, and other settlement requirements.

WHY THE UK

The UK can be relevant for entrepreneurs and business owners who want to actively operate in a major international market, hire talent, manage clients, or expand a serious business presence. For this route, the immigration value depends on genuine business activity, not passive capital placement.

BUSINESS STRUCTURE & COSTS

UK self-sponsorship is not an investment visa. It is a Skilled Worker sponsorship structure built around a genuine UK company, a sponsor licence, an eligible role, and a compliant visa application. Cost planning should cover both business setup and official immigration fees.

QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

There is no fixed Home Office minimum investment for this structure. The key question is whether the business is credible, funded, properly evidenced, and capable of sponsoring a genuine skilled role at the required salary level.

Investment route

  • Establish or use a genuine UK company that can operate lawfully and support the sponsor licence application.
  • Prepare a credible business model, premises or trading evidence where relevant, banking, commercial documents, and source-of-funds evidence.
  • Apply for a Worker sponsor licence so the company can sponsor an eligible Skilled Worker role.
  • Create a genuine skilled role such as Managing Director, Chief Executive, Operations Director, General Manager, or another eligible role that matches the actual business need and occupation code.
  • Assign a valid Certificate of Sponsorship after licence approval and use it for the Skilled Worker visa application within the required period.
  • Ownership of 100% of the UK company can be possible in a self-sponsorship structure, but ownership alone does not satisfy the visa rules without a genuine role and compliant sponsorship.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT PAYMENTS

Applicable to the sponsor company, principal applicant, and any dependants as filed.

Government fee

  • Worker sponsor licence: £611 for a small or charitable sponsor, or £1,682 for a medium or large sponsor.
  • Certificate of Sponsorship: £525 for a Worker CoS assigned to the applicant.
  • Immigration Skills Charge: £480 for the first 12 months and £240 for each additional 6 months for small or charitable sponsors; £1,320 and £660 respectively for medium or large sponsors.

Official payments are only part of the total cost. Skilled Worker visa fees, Immigration Health Surcharge, business setup costs, professional fees, document preparation, translations, and legal support should be budgeted separately.

OTHER COST CONSIDERATIONS

In addition to sponsor and visa fees, applicants should budget for company incorporation or acquisition, business planning, accounting, payroll setup, HR systems, premises or operating evidence, banking, compliance support, translations, and dependent applications. Request a tailored quotation for a case-specific cost schedule.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND TIMELINE

citizenshipinvest
  • STAGE
    1

Business Planning and UK Company Setup

Citizenship Invest reviews the applicant profile, business model, ownership structure, funding position, and whether the intended UK role can fit the Skilled Worker framework.

The UK company is incorporated or prepared, business documents are organized, and evidence such as bank account preparation, premises, contracts, trading activity, or business plan is aligned with sponsor licence expectations.

    STAGE
    1

  • STAGE
    2

    Sponsor Licence Preparation and Filing

The company prepares sponsor licence evidence, appoints key personnel, checks HR systems, and confirms that the business can meet UKVI sponsorship duties.

The sponsor licence application is submitted online with the submission sheet and supporting documents. Most applications are decided in less than 8 weeks, although UKVI may visit the business or request further evidence.

    STAGE
    2

  • STAGE
    3

    Role Creation and CoS Assignment

After licence approval, the company confirms the skilled role, occupation code, duties, salary, working hours, and start date so the Certificate of Sponsorship reflects a genuine eligible position.

The company assigns the correct Certificate of Sponsorship, pays the relevant CoS fee and Immigration Skills Charge where applicable, and provides the CoS reference number for the visa application.

    STAGE
    3

  • STAGE
    4

    Visa Filing and UK Arrival

The applicant submits the Skilled Worker visa application online with the CoS reference, passport, role details, salary details, sponsor licence number, English evidence or exemption, financial evidence where required, and any dependant documents.

After approval, the applicant enters the UK, proves immigration status through the applicable UKVI system, starts the sponsored role, and the company maintains sponsor compliance through records, reporting, payroll, and HR monitoring.

    STAGE
    4

End-to-end timing depends on business readiness, sponsor licence evidence, UKVI review, CoS allocation, visa processing, dependant files, and whether priority services are available. A realistic planning range is often 4 to 6 months where business setup and documentation are not already complete.
